Carrier responsibility

When planning on transportation of your goods, it is useful for you to know about the compensation in case of the worst scenario. It is when the goods are either lost or damaged during the freight.

The owner of the goods can file a claim against the carrier to compensate all and any damage caused to the goods during the freight. The owner of the goods or consignee do not need to pay any additional expenses for that.

  • In land transportation the carrier responsibility is limited to a maximum of 8,33 SDR (≈ 9,6 EUR) per one gross kilogram of goods (CMR insurance)
  • In marine transportation the carrier responsibility is limited to a maximum of 2,00 SDR (≈ 2,3 EUR) per one gross kilogram of goods or 666,67 SDR (≈770 EUR) per one unit of goods (Haag-Visby regulations)
  • In air transportation the carrier responsibility is limited to a maximum of 19 SDR (≈ 21,9 EUR) per one gross kilogram of goods.

The carrier compensation is applied in case the damage has been caused due to a mistake made by the carrier. The carrier is not responsible if the damage was caused by reasons that could have not been avoided by the carrier (for example robbery).

If the value of the goods is much higher than the amount that the carrier responsibility will cover in case of damage, then we strongly recommend to have freight insurance against all risks, according to ICC (A) provision. In Finland and Sweden for example, having additional insurance is quite common and natural.
